Tuesday, January 12th, 2010I often judge a movie by whether or not a.) I want to watch it again and b.) I still think about it a few days after watching the first time. Mary & Max is a movie that fulfilled both criteria and then some. I think many adults are turned off by animation and, because of that, miss out on some truly amazing films. Had my friend, Emily, not recommended this to me I too may have missed out on a movie that touched me more than any other film in the past year. I cannot recommend it enough.
Mary & Max is a movie about loneliness, learning to open up, accepting uniqueness and differences and the importance of friendship. It explores depression and mental disorders in a way that is incredibly poignant but somehow gentle at the same time. It does go dark..but in such an honest way; exploring some of the things that we often hide from in ourselves. The music is also notable, helping the viewer navigate through the highs and lows experienced by both characters. Directed by Adam Elliot. Music composed by Dale Cornelius. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Toni Collette and Eric Bana lend their voices (I never would have guessed that Max’s voice was done by Hoffman, it’s quite impressive!).
Excellent review! I could not agree more on this movie. It is a gem. And I love that your review does not include spoilers!
This looks great. It was the opening night movie at some festival I was at, which made it hard to get into. I guess it must have been Sundance. I saved it on my Netflix queue, I assume it will come out in DVD at some point…
Excellent post! Interested in reading Waiting for new records
