New Music Friday: The Sound of You

1. Family Of The Year – Chugjug
This song is such a great falling-in-love springtime track. It’s cheerful and full of pure, honest sweetness. The two main singers, Meredith Sheldon and Joe Keefe, harmonize together seamlessly. Hailing from LA’s own Silverlake area, they have toured with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and opened up for Ben Folds. If you are in LA, you can catch them when they open up for Gomez at The El Rey on 3/21. You can buy tickets for that HERE. You can also buy their just released EP, “Through The Trees” for only $4 now HERE.

2. Wolf Gang – Back To Back
Wolf Gang is Max McElligot, a London School of Economics dropout who instead chose to use his intelligence to turn out flawlessly good music. Clash Magazine labeled him as “the man of the synth-pop moment.” He’s stylish, talented and currently making big waves in the blogosphere. This song hooked me upon first listen and I love the way the mix plays a sort of hide-and-go-seek with the vocals. There is a video to accompany the track which you can watch HERE. Fingers crossed for a Wolf Gang album release this spring.

3. Zeus – The Sound of You
Toronto based Zeus is made up of two of Jason Collett’s (best known from his work with Broken Social Scene) former band-backers Mike O’Brien and Carlin Nicholson along with their longtime friends Rob Drake and Neil Quinn. Mixed by Robbie Lackritz (Feist) it’s one of those albums I heard in the background while I was working and had to immediately see what it was that I was listening to. Their current album “Say Us”, just out on 2/23, brings to mind some of the best rock music from the 1960s and I am completely fine with the heavy Ray Davies/The Kinks influence. It’s an album worth owning. You can get it now HERE.

4. Zola Jesus – I Can’t Stand
Zola Jesus = 20-year-old Nika Roza Danilova. She is a bit like a female Ian Curtis with a little Karen O and Kate Bush mixed in for good measure. It’s dark and brooding, intense and serious. Pitchfork said it best when they stated: “Whether creaking or soaring, Danilova’s voice transmits with a directness that easily cuts through the layers of lo-fi grime that usually surround it. You don’t hear singers like this every day, or even every year.” Raised on 100 acres of forest in “the dead of nowhere” in Northern Wisconsin, she is opera-trained and currently studying French and Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin. I am expecting big things in the future from this talented girl. This song comes off her just released EP Stridulum which you can buy HERE.

5. LCD Soundsystem – Oh You (Christmas Blues)
Fresh off of it’s NME Radio premiere (I found this courtesy of Fader), this song comes from the much anticipated soundtrack to Noah Baumbach’s upcoming film Greenberg out on 3/26. It features, among others, 11 songs from the extremely talented James Murphy. However, this is the only song on the album to be listed under the LCD Soundsystem name. You can check out the entire soundtrack listing on The Playlist blog HERE. You can check out the trailer to the film HERE. Soundtrack out on 3/22.

6. Kavinsky – Nightcall
I am a sucker for all things French, especially French film and music. At the moment, I am completely smitten with two Parisians: Breakbot and Kavinsky. Breakbot remixing Kavinsky? Yes, please. The original track was produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (1/2 of Daft Punk) and mixed by SebastiAN. Considering Kavinsky has toured with Daft Punk, The Rapture and Justice, you can bet he’s immensely talented at his craft. Lovefoxx from CSS offers her beautiful vocals to this song and I love the whole dark vs. light feel. Both the original and the Breakbot remix are featured below. You can buy the EP Nightfall on 3/15 HERE.

Oldies but worth a re-listen:

1. Janis Joplin – Summertime
Such a great live performance from Janis…

2. Beck – Debra
I love this song and also the “Frontin’ on Debra” remix / DJ Reset Mash-Up.

  2. I agree with max. I stumbled upon this blog from HypeM. I’m digging the “Debra” mashup. It’s soul revival meets funkytown. Good find!

  3. Oh man — that Beck video brings back serious memories. I used to sing that so much to my girlfriend at the time that I think I permanently damaged the relationship.

Bands should all wear what the guys in this video are wearing, btw.
